Spring Cleaning from the inside out

I don’t know about you, but when I get the first inkling of Spring in the air, I just want to clean. I open up all the windows (maybe a little too early, it’s getting a little brisk in here…) and move everything around to scrub and arrange. It just feels so good to be in a fresh, clean house!

The same is true for my body. Over the winter, I tend to gravitate towards heavier, denser, fattier foods, and the snugness of my jeans proves it. Maybe it’s all the extra sunlight hitting my skin, but I start to crave more and more vegetables, and I want that feeling of lightness and vibrancy I can only get from changing my food choices to more cleansing things.

I like to kick off my renewed way of eating by doing some gentle cleansing. I’m not talking about one of those cleanses that makes you need to stay near the bathroom all day; those are painful, temporary lessons in reading ingredients. Herbal teas are great, they’re helpful and hydrating, along with green, black, and red teas. Getting extra water, even in the form of unsweetened tea, is a must, since that’s how your body shuttles out the excess toxins you release.

I’m not really a fan of tracking calories, but I do suggest lowering your overall intake of food, and making what you do eat primarily vegetables. If you want the best results, I suggest doing all raw veggies for a week or two, and nothing else. This will revitalize your body and mind, and you’ll probably lose a little weight. It’s also an effective idea to add fasting in, where all you consume for one to 3 days is water and unsweetened tea. There is a process in the body called autophagy, where cells do an internal cleanup and remove accumulated waste matter that is more difficult to break down. This process only happens in the absence of external fuel, and will even help in burning off any underlying or low grade infections that you may not have even noticed.

Juicing is an amazing way to help cleanse your body. Investing in a high quality masticating (which means “chewing”) juicer will give you fresh, nutrient rich juices that have all their enzymes intact. Enzymes are literally the key in all of our biological processes, so adding these will take a great load off of your body. Be careful with juicing though. Adding many fruits can make your juices extra delicious…and extra sugary, which is exactly what we don’t need. A little is fine, just don’t go overboard. Some of the best vegetables to juice are beets, carrots, asparagus, and celery. Apples are an ideal fruit to add, as are oranges and grapefruits, just make sure to peel off all the skin and pith from the last two as they can add an unpalatable bitterness.

Try these tactics for an effective internal cleanse, and you’ll be feeling renewed in no time!
